Perhaps the most picturesque sight in
Trieste is the Miramare Castle. It's built on ground that juts out to the Gulf of Trieste. Miramare was built in the 19th century, gbegan in 1856 and finished after four years. Archduke Maximilian was then emperoro of Mexico and he used the castle to entertain delegates from the New World. Maximilian ansd his wife Princess Charlotte of Beligium, led a happy life there. The tragedy was in Mexico. Crowned as emperor, Maximillan went to live in Mexico in 1864 and there faced stiff resistance from a people who didn't recognize his legitimacy.
With US support, the Republicans begin winning the war. Charlotte went back to Europe seeking succor for her husband and went mad. Maximilian was captured in May 1867, court-martialled and was shot on June 19.
